Fijian Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the country's jail laws allow the leader of the Corrections Services to permit serving inmates participate in carrying sports.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed this in parliament after opposition MP Lenora Qereqeretabua asked for the coverage that allows a prisoner "to play in a countrywide rugby sevens competition."
Last month, girls's rights agencies raised issues after a former Fiji sevens rugby player, in jail for rape, represented the Wardens group at Fiji Rugby Union sanctioned tournaments.
Sayed-Khaiyum stated there are several schemes that empower the Corrections Commissioner to allow convicts to have interaction in outdoor sports as a part of their rehabilitation.
He said, at one point Fiji's prices of recidivism had been 50 percentage however that has decreased notably.

"In conjunction with the Yellow Ribbon application, Sir, together with the various orders of the Commissioner of Corrections in fact Mr Speaker Sir, is operating properly in a holistic way to ensure that the rates of recidivism drops in Fiji. The powers exist inside the Corrections Act itself," he said.
